SERVICES HELD FOR PHARMACIST IRV LEBO

St. Paul Pioneer Press (MN) - Tuesday, February 21, 1995

Author: BYLINE: Wayne Wangstad, Staff Writer

Services were held Monday for Irv Lebo , owner of the Grand Rexall Drug at Grand and Hamline avenues for 36 years.

Lebo , 89, died of cancer Saturday in the Sholom Home West in St. Louis Park.

A former resident of St. Paul, Lebo was born in Brooklyn, N.Y., and graduated from the Albany College of Pharmacy. He moved to Minnesota in the 1930s after losing a pharmacy in Syracuse, N.Y., during the Great Depression.

Lebo was a pharmacist in Northfield until the early 1940s, when he moved to St. Paul to operate the Grand Rexall Drug, which he sold about 10 years ago, according to his daughter, Joanne Lebo of Golden Valley.

She recalled her father's pharmacy as a neighborhood gathering place where her father would answer medical questions posed by customers. She also remembered how her Jewish father forged strong friendships among the residents of a predominately Irish-Catholic neighborhood.

During the 1960s, Lebo also owned the Suburban Rexall Drug in Crystal, which he sold after a few years.

A charter member of what is now the Grand Avenue Business Association, Lebo was a member of the group that spurred the renovation that has occurred along Grand Avenue over the years.

Lebo was a Mason and also was active in the Shrine.

Besides his daughter, he is survived by a son, Martin of St. Louis Park, and two grandchildren.
